 THE HISTORY OF LAPU-LAPU CITY

it that Mactan Island although small was a thriving community when the great Magellan was in Cebu. The brave Spanish navigator and soldier, upon learning that some inhabitants on this tiny island across Cebu refused to recognize the King of Spain, burned one of the villages. Lapu-Lapu was one of the native leaders who refused to acknowledge the sovereignty of Spain over the Islands.
When Magellan, with three boatloads of Spaniards and twenty boatloads of Cebuanos, went to Mactan to help a friendly chief, Lapu-Lapu and his men armed with native fighting elements, wooden shields, bows and arrows, lances, met them. The invading Spaniards and Cebuanos were driven back to their boats, but their brace leader, Magellan, met death in the hands of Lapu-Lapu. On what is believed to be the exact spot where Magellan fell and died now stands an imposing monument in honour of the gallant explorer.
In the 16th century Mactan Island was colonized by Spain. An Augustinians friar founded the town of Opon in 1730 and became a city in 1961 and was renamed after Datu Lapu-Lapu, a Muslim king who defeated Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan in 1521. This battle is commemorated at the Lapu-Lapu shrine in Punta EngañoHistory has .
Politician Manuel A. Zosa, the representative of the Sixth District of Cebu, sponsored the Bill converting the former municipality of Opon into the present day City of Lapu-Lapu. This was the Republic Act 3134, known as the City Charter of Lapu-Lapu which was signed on June 17, 1961 by former Philippine President Carlos P. Garcia.

The Magellan Shrine pays tribute to Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan, who was the first European to arrive in the Philippines. It is said to mark the spot where he died during the Battle of Mactan. Learn about this important facet of Philippines history for a deeper understanding of the local culture.
The stone platform has a plaque stating the date of Magellan’s battle death, April 27, 1521. The monument itself dates back to 1866 and was erected by Spanish colonial rulers. Examine the plaque proclaiming “Spanish Glory” and another carving with Magellan’s original Portuguese name.
Visit the nearby statue of his vanquisher, the native chieftain Lapu-Lapu. It depicts a muscular, long-haired man carrying a sword and shield. His forces defeated the invading Spanish settlers in the Battle of Mactan. It is thought Lapu-Lapu was the first native of the Philippines to resist colonization.

 VIRGEN DELA REGLA

THE ORIGINAL IMAGE OF NUESTRA SEÑORA VIRGEN DE LA REGLA venerated at the national shrine of Nuestra Señora Virgen de la Regla in opon, lapu-lapu city, mactan island, cebu.

The church of Our Lady of the Rule is in Opon town on the historic island of Mactan. The people first saw a picture of the Virgen de la Regla in 1735, when the first parish priest, Francisco Avalle, an Augustinian monk, showed it to them. Father Avalle was a devotee, having lived for 10 years in the Monastery of Nuestra Señora de la Regla in Chipiona, Andalucia, Spain. St. Augustine himself venerated this image. When he died in 430, his monks continued the devotion to her. When the Vandals invaded Africa in 433, the monks fled to Spain, taking the image with them. For several centuries, the Virgen de la Regla was venerated under several names: Virgen Libica, Virgen del Sagrario, Estrella de los Mares and La Virgen Morena, or Morenita.
